Inhomogeneity in static magnetic field (B0) impairs the spatial encoding and causes imaging artifacts. This is especially severe when scanning patients or subjects with implants as the implants (such as Pacemakers, hip joints, DBS) are mainly metal and have huge susceptibility differences from the human tissue.
One solution is to use the additional multiple DC coils, which can compensate for the inhomogeneity of B0 field. A primary challenge in the current method is that the DC coils cannot be directly used with existing RF coils because the DC coil would impair RF signal performance and lead to imaging quality degradation.
We propose using a unique DC coil that is transparent to the RF field in MRI and thus can achieve the same goal of B0 shimming but without impairing the RF signal.
